What explains variation in the willingness of militant non-state actors to accept last than their stated preferred institutional outcome---which ranges in scope from regime overthrow to territorial change---during bargaining with the government?

I argue that this variation can be explained by variation in the beliefs of extremist organizations about the credibility of alternative institutional outcomes. I intend to test this theory using qualitative and quantitative methods including in-depth case studies, interviews with former members of militant non-state actors, and statistical techniques such as text analysis. Finally, I show how the theoretical framework developed throughout this project can be applied to a wide range of militant non-actors---including terrorist groups, rebel movements, and guerrilla organizations---with direct implications for how governments combat the threat presented by these violent non-state actors.
